Three Months at Microsoft

Time Flies when you’re having fun or when you’re crazy busy-  I’m unsure which is more true.

I just completed my first review as an employee at Microsoft and good news!  They’re going to keep me. </p />

Where in the World is DBA Goth Girl- Sept 11-23

Tim and I just arrived back in Colorado yesterday and just arrived-  as in Grand Junction, Colorado on the western border of Utah.  Hauling a 42Ft. 5th wheel means that you make some considerations on how far you can go and how far you want to go.

It’s going to be a busy couple of weeks and this is what’s in the plans:

Microsoft Education Data Summit

I’ll be flying to Las Vegas tomorrow morning to attend and train in Las Vegas with the rest of my technical peers in the education sector of Microsoft.  I look forward to these events, as it’s a rare time that I get to see my colleagues as a remote employee and the training is top notch.

Learn Linux With Docker and Microsoft Container Image

I just finished teaching an 8 hour pre-con at SQL Saturday Indianapolis on Essential Linux for the DBA.  The focus of the class was on what the Microsoft DBA would need to know as more SQL Server environments begin to run on Linux.

The obstacles and demands of them will be a bit different than the Oracle crowd, as they may not have the Linux Admin or Unix expertise onsite for support and have to fend for themselves more than I did starting out on Linux.

Some folks asked me why I chose to use Docker with the SQL Server image to teach the class and I wanted to demonstrate why this, over VMWare or other options were my final choice.

The Journey Begins- Power BI and AI

I’m back!!  I know you missed my posts…be honest…. </p />

First Day at Microsoft, the Satya Way

So I’ve finally crawled my way back out of the hole I dug myself in this last month.  The house is empty, the 5th wheel is ready for us to move into and I’m now in Redmond, doing my NEO, (New Employee Orientation.)

I swear this is all I see in my head every time I hear “NEO” </p />

Time is Gold

So many have asked me when I’m starting at Microsoft and the official date is Monday, June 11th now.  Many also wonder what my upper limits are on how much I can handle, well folks, it looks like we’ve reached them!

Be the Change You Want to See In the (Tech) World

The only thing that stays the same is change….

As the time flies by and the world turns, I often am jarred back to reality when I discover how the little things we do can have a larger impact on the world around us.

Flying back from Interop ITX and StarEast conferences last week, I was reminded of this.  While reading the latest copy of Wired , I came across a story on D-Tech High School.  This is the school that resides on the Oracle headquarters campus, in its own building(s). The story was interviewing different students to discuss how they were making an impact on the technical world and how STEM schools, like D-Tech were changing the future.  What struck me, was that the lead in picture and student interview was with a young woman I’d worked with two years earlier as part of the Oracle Education Foundation.

Kudos to Pass Summit 2017

This week I had the opportunity to present at Microsoft’s Pass Summit, which was one of two events I had on my list for this year, (the other was Oracle Open World.) Although I’m still learning about all the events on the Microsoft side, unlike Oracle, where there’s one, massive event in San Francisco each fall, Microsoft has split their annual events into three to focus on each audience. In less than two months, there was MS Ignite in Florida, focused on tomorrow’s technology, IT Dev Connections, geared towards development and then this week, Pass Summit, for the Data Platform expert, (DBA and Data Scientist…)  I’m unsure of what events are going to have to leave my list I currently attend to fit these ones in, but somethings going to have to give.

Video: SQL Server Databases on Microsoft Azure

I mentioned in a previous post, the whole look and feel of Microsoft Azure has been rejigged. As a result, I had to do a run through of the SQL Server DBaaS stuff to update the screen shots in and old article on the subject.

Azure : SQL Server Databases on Azure

Since I was doing that, I figured I might as well do a video for my YouTube channel.

Cheers
