Stats collection time

Yesterday I posted a note about querying dba_optstat_operations to get a quick report of how long calls to dbms_stats had been taking but said I had another script that helped to fill some of the gaps it left. One of my readers points out fairly promptely that 12c enhances the feature considerably, with a view dba_optstat_operation_tasks that (for example) lists all the tables processed during a single call to gather_schema_stats.

Well, I wrote my script years (if not decades) before 12c came out, so I’m going to publish it anyway.

Oracle’s DBaaS Is Easy


Oracle has been king of the database hill for many years. Now, they’re extending that dominance to the cloud. Oracle DataBase as a Service (DBaaS) uses the Platform as a Service (PaaS) model to enable deployment and management of Oracle database instances in the cloud.

Using Oracle’s DataBase as a Service (DBaaS) is quick and easy. In the example below I create and deploy an Oracle SE instance in about thirty minutes; about twenty of that was waiting for the system to complete provisioning. Have you ever been able to create a database and built the server space it required so simply? Once you have Oracle’s DBaaS, instance creation and deployment can be as easy as following a wizard-based process; no forms to fill out from you operations people and no hardware to purchase/allocate.

Along with the deep learning I’ve been allowed to do about data virtualization, I’ve learned a great deal about Test Data Management.  Since doing so, I’ve started to do some informal surveys of the DBAs I run into and ask them, “How do you get data to your testers so that they can perform tests?”  “How do you deliver code to different environments?”

I don’t really remember how long it’s been since Oracle created an automatic log of how long a call to the dbms_stats package took, though it was probably some time in the 10g time-line. It wasn’t until it had been around for several years, though before I wrote little script (possibly prompted by a comment from Martin Widlake) that I’ve used occasionally since to see what’s been going on in the past, how variable stats collection times have been, and what unexpected dbms_stats call an application may have been making. Here’s what it currently looks like:

How to use DURATION with RMAN backups in #Oracle

The DURATION clause enables you to reduce the performance impact of RMAN backups respectively it sets a certain time limit for the backup.

Let’s suppose your RMAN backup takes one hour now and you take it online while end users work with the database. This reduces the performance impact of the online backup by half approximately:

RMAN> backup duration 02:00 minimize load database;

The first two digits are hours, the second two digits are minutes. Above command tells RMAN to spend 02 hours and 00 minutes with the backup that takes normally one hour. That way, RMAN gets throttled down, causing roughly half the load on the system than otherwise.
